Installer v4.0 is Coming. Brace Yourself.

If you’ve jailbroken your iPhone running the 2.0 firmware, you’ve currently just got the Cydia application for installing new apps, not the old, familiar Installer app that was the far more ‘mainstream’ option up through firmware 1.1.4.
Good news if you’re hankering for Installer though – an update last week on the RiP Dev blog sounds very positive:
Hi folks! Many of you are wondering what’s up with Installer 4. No, we haven’t slowed down the work on it, and are currently in the final stages of hooking the GUI to the back-end. We will be contacting the authors of the major repositories in a few days to invite them into the testing process and to prepare for the upcoming repository changes.
Installer Kicks App Store’s Arse?
So hopefully we are not far off seeing Installer released for iPhone 2.0 – and it’s looking awfully good in the preview screenshots like the one above. Check out more of them HERE.
After having spent a few weeks with the App Store now, I have to say the content of it (i.e. the number of cool apps) is very impressive. But … the performance, the actual working of the App Store is not so great. I’d say Installer kicked its butt in working solidly and just doing its job reliably.
I say that because I just can’t recall Installer crashing very much, if at all. The App Store (on both a V1 and a 3G model) is much more flaky, for me at least. It regularly crashes and individual installs hang up for ridiculous amounts of time, with no ability to stop or pause them. When an install would fail on Installer it would fail quickly and decisively, would announce its failure, and let you retry or just get on with something else.
Apple get lots of things very, very right on the iPhone – no doubt about that, but in this area, I think they could still learn a thing or five from the guys who develop Installer …

Another multi-client IM you should know!

Palringo is the latest IM client to hit the iPhone, and the first multi-client IM to be made available on the Apple App Store.
One nice feature of Palringo is that it lets you add pictures to the messages. This feature is missing from the better alternative in the market – Agile Messenger – although AM is available previously to a wider audience as it is a jailbroken app made possible via Installer.
The one big limitation of the Palringo app due to Apple’s SDK restrictions is that it has no ability to run in the background – so you have to have the program open in order to know when a new message comes in, or carry on a continuous conversation.

AT&T sold twice as much iPhone3G than the original iPhone

Yup, the above header says it all. And that would attest to the popularity of the iPhone 3G variant right now. It has indeed achieve the status of a cult gadget, a status symbol, a must-have for most of us out there.
It is no wonder that major outlets in the States are still dry of supply of the iPhone 3G stock, having to wait for Apple to re-stock them come mid-August. Expect another major shortage before the start of September 2008.
This is what AT&T said :
AT&T also confirmed that sales of the iPhone 3G were “nearly double levels achieved in AT&T’s 2007 iPhone launch” across the 12 days following its US launch. And that’s despite limited availability of the device.

Get QUAKE-ing on the iPhone 2.0

It is nice to know that Quake4iPhone is officially a reality for iPhone 2.0. Recently released under Cydia, original iPhone users who had already done the update to OS X iPhone 2.0 firmware would be able to try out the ported version of this gaming phenomenon that has garnered quite a cult status back in the 90′s.
Check it out and let us know!

Beware the Infamous iPhone Apps Scam

iPhoneApps.org, currently the top Google result when searching for “iPhone apps,” offers 10 apps for $24.95, including “much-sought-after MMS and video recording capability”.
But, you would have to jailbreak your iPhone to get the apps to work. According to a post by a disgruntled customer at Yahoo! Answers, the site is only selling ZiPhone, and instructions on how to install the apps shown on their homepage.
This is an outright scam. And they have been around for some time. With a spiffy looking site, to give credit where credit is due. And what about ZiPhone? That is a complete freeware from the wonderful mind of Zibri, check it out … here.

The Great iPhone3G Stock Blackout!

We’ve seen incredible demand for iPhone 3G since it launched — and subsequently sold out — on July 11. Many customers have opted to purchase iPhone 3G through direct fulfillment, which lets them purchase the device at their convenience and return to the store to pick it up as soon as it arrives in to the store. For those customers who have ordered through direct fulfillment, and have not yet received their iPhone 3G, here’s a quick update on our current inventory:
- As of July 23, direct fulfillment customers are receiving their iPhone 3G, on average, 13 or 14 days following purchase.
- Delivery times vary based on the specific model a customer chooses (8 GB, 16 GB white, 16 GB black).
AT&T handles direct fulfillment on a first-come, first-served basis, giving everyone an opportunity for stress-free shopping. As we receive new inventory from Apple, we are shipping it out immediately to fill customers’ orders. We hope to begin re-stocking our stores as soon as we can, but first priority goes to those customers who purchased through direct fulfillment.

An Important Announcement from iWorld, Malaysia

[Updated : Follow up to Published Rates for iPhone3G at iWorld, Malaysia]
I would like to take this opportunity to clear a misconception some of you had – we are not the ones jacking up the prices right now, and I can assure you the same could be said of our vendors/suppliers.
It is the acute demand for the iPhone 3G that pushes the price up, and moreover, the present outage of stock by Apple – at least until the next re-stocking in mid-August – would indirectly affect the selling price for now.

After some lengthy discussions with my partner today, and noting the fact that our present vendors are not able to offer us a more affordable pricing for the iPhone 3G (which is of course tough considering there’s no stock, after all, we are barely 2 weeks after the July 11th launch!) we have to implement a few changes as per the following :
(a) We are sticking to the iWorld iPhone 3G Pre-Order List for now, with priority given to the Top 20 of that list (we have around 100+ names at the moment). For the rest of you who are also on the Pre-Order List, or have already submitted your details to us before, but not within the Top 20, you are entitled to purchase the iPhone 3G (8GB or 16GB) as well for as long as (a) we have enough stock, and (b) we have already given priority to the Top 20 to decide if they intend to purchase or otherwise, (c) you are comfortable with the current pricing. The Top 20 List would lapse within 7 Days of posting.
(b) Sales at iWorld, Malaysia pertaining to the iPhone 3G in both capacity of 8GB & 16GB would be strictly for the benefit of those on the Pre-Order List for now. This is merely an estimation for us here at iWorld pertaining to stock count level and so on. Once we have catered to each and everyone on the pre-order list – including those with bulk orders – would we then release the rest of the remaining units to the public.
(c) We have decided not to implement the rebate scheme as that would complicate matters even further.
(d) Final call for the iPhone 3G (16GB, choice of Black or White). We will start shipping (most likely) from Monday onwards, assuming no further downtime from our vendors. iPhone 3G (8GB, Black Only) would be available by this coming week. After that, let the wait continues … (refer: Sorry, we’re Sold Out.)
(e) Appreciate all those who have given us their input on this, and thank you for the personal messages and calls. All the best to the vendors as well – sorry to hear that one of you barely got pass activation & jailbreak but stuck at the unlocking part, and to another vendor who burnt 2 units in the process.
Thank you.
- Reno / iWorld, Malaysia.

Priority right now would be given to the Top 20 on the Pre-Order List who are in the iWorld iPhone 3G Pre-Order List. We welcome interested parties who are NOT in the Top 20, but have already submitted your details to us for the iPhone 3G Pre-Order List. This is because not everyone on the current Top 20 would be comfortable with the asking price, contactable, the models available (8GB or 16GB) etc. We reserved the right to move down the Pre-Order List in accordance to the models that you have requested for, which corresponds to the current models that we have In Stock.
If you are reading this, ask yourself : “Are you in the iPhone3G Pre-Order List?” No? Then what are you waiting for?! Head on over to iWorld iPhone 3G Pre-Order List and submit your details now!
