It’s official. iPhone 3G from Maxis is locked.

This just in! And it’s not an April Fool’s joke.
We received words from at least 2 of our recent buyers that in the course of sourcing & comparing pricing for the iPhone 3G, they made a brief stop at Maxis Centre to enquire on the iPhone 3G plans that are being advertised.
After going through a briefing of the not-so-favourable 1 to 2 year contractual plans in store, both buyers happened to ask the Maxis sales personnel if they could switch in a competitor’s simcard such as that from DiGi or Celcom. That is AFTER signing for a contract and purchasing the phone from Maxis.
The Maxis sales personnel mentioned that they could, at their discretion should they choose to. However, they can ONLY use the iPhone 3G for calls & SMSes ONLY.
Data connectivity (3G access, internet surfing, GPRS, EDGE, etc) would not be functional anymore. To their knowledge, it is disabled/crippled if you’re not using the Maxis iPhone 3G with the supplied simcard & of course the 1 to 2 year contractual plan that you have signed up for.
This scenario is akin to that of a locked US/UK iPhone 3G. Trust us on this, nothing beats having a fully 100% factory unlocked iPhone 3GS. Such as that from iWorld, Malaysia. Any country, any network, for both postpaid AND prepaid users as well.

Yes, I support u on this and sorry for the late compliments. I’m very satisfied with your “fast delivery” and your good after sales service. Thank you iWorld! U guys have done a good job in bringing this unlocked phone to us Malaysians!
Hi Alicia!
Thanks for dropping by. Yes, Alicia was one of the above 2 recent buyers who gave us the heads-up on the locked iPhone 3G situation from Maxis.
She’s now the proud owner of a brand new Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G (16GB) in Glossy White(!) bought from iWorld, MY.
Thanks Alicia for the kind & wonderful words, god bless.
